GODSNAKE out of Hamburg, Germany label themselves as a melodic thrash metal outfit. I will tell you right now, if you’re an old school thrasher wearing a battle vest festooned with SODOM, SLAYER and DESTRUCTION patches, “Inhale the Noise” is not gonna be for you. The band favor a more modern form of groovy thrash mixed with metalcore style vocal melodies and sometimes even what sounds like radio-ready dad rock.
That sounds bad, and for some of you, it is, but this record is a surprisingly smooth and enjoyable listen. Not every band needs to wear six-inch spikes and have hair hanging in front of their eyes. There is a kind of blandness here that seeps in but it never takes over completely. I would never say GODSNAKE is a Top 10 band, but I rather liked “Inhale the Noise”.
“Screaming For a Bullet” is a great start and you can tell these guys are tight. This is a grooving thrasher with melody and the vocals of Torger are pleasing to the ear. “Lost and Forgotten” is even better…lots of hooks in this one…but the title track tends toward the sappy side and I can hear commercial radio rock influence like SHINEDOWN here. The band eases up on the gas, as “Enemy of Great” is a typical semi-ballad, but things pick up once more for “Rotten To The Core” (not an OVERKILL cover) and a ballsy “A Place To Call Home”.
After that, though, the commercial side of GODSNAKE takes over and while the album never becomes completely obnoxious, songs like “Creator Of Shame” are about as smoothed down and radio-friendly as you can get. I will give them points for having a song called “Digital Dumbass” though.
Not a bad album if you’re looking for something pleasant and inoffensive but still heavy.
