This album is pretty much a make or break proposition for me. Overall, GOD DETHRONED has been a favorite band of mine but their last couple of disc's have been tired and downright uninspired.
I can say that "The Judas Paradox" is at least a step in the right direction if still not up there with their very best. The band these days is longtime main man Henri Sattler and whatever utility players he's hired at the moment. The title track is a strange choice to start things off, as it is the longest and slowest cut on the album. Very baroque and melodic, with Henri’s voice sounding really processed. Not a terrible song but a weird choice for an opener.
Things pick up from there, as "Rat King" adds speed and nervous energy, along with more of that baroque melody peculiar to GOD DETHRONED. "The Hanged Man" is even better...a real bulldozer as good as any of their classic stuff.
Much of the album is fast and thrashy, like "Broken Bloodlines" and "Asmodeus", although "Kashmir Princess" is a slower, moodier number. The production is rather compressed and I can't say I like Henri's vocals much...they are lacking something. "The Judas Paradox" is a solid album but I set the bar pretty high for these guys. I still hope to hear a real classic from them.
