Austin, Texas metal maniacs SADISTIC FORCE self-released their latest offering “Morbid Odyssey” late August of this year and it's about what you'd expect: Blackened metal. From a sonic perspective the music runs the gamut crisscrossing the spectrum of blackened speed-thrash over the course of five songs. The million-dollar question is, is “Morbid Odyssey” good or did SADISTIC FORCE lay an egg?
“Morbid Odyssey” is good for what it is, but it doesn't reach the level of riffworthiness achieved by previous records “Pain, Sex, and Rapture” or “Aces Wild”. This doesn't mean “Morbid Odyssey” isn't good, but it is competing in a close to saturated genre that's nearing blackened thrash fatigue. I don't hear anything new and different, but I'm not opposed to what I hear on Morbid Odyssey” either.
Tracks two and three, "Soft Flesh For The Dungeon Of The Damned" and "Strike After Strike" are solid headbangers. "Abnormal Cruelties," has a wicked early VENOM (think “Welcome To Hell”) vibe driving it, and the title track, "Morbid Odyssey," will take your head off, but the problem is I'm not hearing anything new or unique.
Like I previously mentioned, “Morbid Odyssey” is a good slab of speedy, thrashy, heavy metal, but I don't hear SADISTIC FORCE bringing anything new to the table. I've heard this music before in some way, shape, or form by other bands and when you’re competing with MIDNIGHT, NUNSLAUGHTER, BEWITCHER, etc., you’ve got to bring your “A” game every time. “Morbid Odyssey” is a “B” effort at best.
Here’s the good news. If you’re a diehard SADISTIC FORCE fan, you’ll like “Morbid Odyssey”, it’s what you’d expect from them musically. Same thing holds true if you’re a fan of the blackened metal genre. I’ll throw the horns for this, especially “Abnormal Cruelties,” but overall I can’t recommend it more highly than that.
