Get your heavy duty diving suit ready, we are going to dive into the filthiest depths of the death-doom septic tank with Spain’s SANCTUARIUM. This is as slimy and repulsive as you can get without verging into total noise...a conglomeration of the lowest degree of INCANTATION/DEAD CONGREGATION/ENCOFFINATION riffs, bargain basement production values and incomprehensible wind tunnel vocal croaks. The shame about this, is that you’ve pretty much heard it all before.
They are treading a very well worn path and the overwhelming impression I get from “Melted and Decomposed” is that it reworks the steps of pioneers. It’s like playing a game of “where I have I heard this riff before”? The game starts with “Abhorrent Excruciation in Reprisal” and lasts until the final agonized notes of “The Disembodied Grip of Putrecine Stench”. Incidentally, the song titles are also pretty routine.
And yet, for lovers of this sort of crawling malevolence, there’s something about it that always works. You can get lost in the lengthy muck-encrusted horrors of “Phlegmatic Convulsions” and “Sadistic Cremation of Emaciated Offal”...it’s almost relaxing in a repulsive way. And SANCTUARIUM is a band that knows exactly what kind of sound they’re after and they pursue it with fiendish relish.
You should know by now if this is for you or not. I’m sure there are some real sickos out there just waiting for this kind of gruesome effluent.
