Montreal, QC is producing more metal bands than Mexico has drug murders. One of the latest is SCARE, a band delivering a raucous combo of hardcore, sludge and thrash, with even a little bit of post-punk mixed in. Is it something you’re going to remember for the rest of your life? No, but if you’re looking for a quick fix of really raw and heavy music, you’ve come to the right place.
These guys come at you fast and quick, without a lot of time to breath. Songs are short and violent and you can tell SCARE is rooted in hardcore punk. There’s a lot of the early 2000’s hardcore scene here, especially in Phillip Roy’s screaming vocals, which are much in the vein of CONVERGE. When an album’s first song is titled “Never Mind If It All Explodes, I’ll Die Anyway”, you know you’re in for a real cheerful experience. Well, with the world being the fucking mess it is these days, what else can you expect from an honest band? Leave it to corporate garbage to sugarcoat things, extreme metal should deliver the truth.
The band mixes violent speed with sludgier parts to good effect. Some tracks come across as fairly anonymous, but at least they’re delivered with admirable roughness. On some cuts like “The Black Painting”, “Doomynation #1” and “Doomynation #2”, they mix in some eerie post-punk, almost Goth bits, but they don’t last very long. With 13 tracks to blast through, SCARE know enough not to play the same song 13 times in a row.
A good kick in the pants from North of the Border...something to take your mind off apocalyptic wildfires, criminals in high office and maniac billionaires. Or maybe not….
