THÆTAS     “The Irredeemable Age”

Here’s some gut-ripping brutality out of Noo Yawk, but with a very glitchy and twisty quirk to it. THÆTAS features scene veterans from bands like BUCKSHOT FACELIFT and REEKING AURA, but sounding only vaguely like those bands. Believe me, you will need nerves of steel to make it through this thing all at once.

‘DHUKHA” starts with gut-bucket bass and a very icky, cavernous sound but soon mutates into ugly tech-death insanity in the style of Comatose Music and early Unique Leader bands. This is not tech-death that is clean and polished…it wallows in filth like a warthog. Part of what makes THÆTAS worth listening to are the little quirky bits that pop up amidst the rot…odd slices of piano, surprising little dips into acoustic guitar like on “Daytime Lantern”, jazzy licks injected into the SUFFOCATION style insanity of “Digital Locusts”. If you took these little side trips out, this would be almost impossible to get through.

A lot of times the GORGUTS dissonance and the constant barrage of squeaky-skronky guitar wears on you, but tracks like longest number “Digital Locusts”, the extremely ominous title track and “Stretched Paradox” deliver brutal riffing that leaves scars. Toss in ultra-guttural growls and you have a brutal death metal experience that will separate the men from the boys. Very interested to see what direction THÆTAS goes in from here.
