MELTIFICATION is a two-piece studio project out of Denmark, comprised of Copenhagen hardcore-scene veteran Tue Sprogø (DEATH TOKEN, ASBEST, DEFORMATION) on vocals, guitar, and bass, and ex-IMPERIOUS MORTALITY drummer Thomas Rindom on the skins. Their goal was to create a grindcore album that would be at home back in 1988 alongside your NAPALM DEATH and TERRORIZER tapes.
Their self-titled debut is a collection of 18 songs. They are typical grindcore tunes—short, fast, and violent. While there’s nothing remarkable or new, MELTIFICATION do execute their grind brew about as well as can be. Musically, everything feels like barely contained chaos which is the goal.
If there’s a quibble to be made, it’s that the production sounds a bit too pristine. It sounds like a digital recording which doesn’t do much to convey a punk aesthetic or a vibe from 35 years ago. The result is an antiseptic record where everything comes across a bit too thin, clean, and safe. Obviously, none of those attributes are the right choice for an album of this nature.
Conceptually, MELTIFICATION seems to stick to timely dystopian scenarios and fictional horror, evidenced by song titles such as “Assembly Line of Horror”, “Nuclear Death Threat”, “A.I.mageddon”, and “Lycanthropic Brutality”. So…werewolves, I guess?
The bottom line here is that while MELTIFICATION’s debut material is stellar, their presentation of it in album form is less successful. It’s a grindcore album with modern hardcore production values, and though that isn’t outright egregious, it does detract from the material’s potential impact. Fans of bands such as MAGRUDERGRIND, WORMROT, and INSECT WARFARE will find enough to like, nonetheless.
