SINHERESY

SINHERESY     ”Event Horizon”

By Iron Sheik

Alien face hugger on the cover aside, SINHERESY, hailing from Italy, delivers the goods on “Event Horizon”. Described as a melodic modern metal band, SINHERESY is so much more.  Some of the music contained on this fourth album brushes with metalcore and symphonic metal. In no way are they confused playing all the different styles. They are a band that takes elements of all those styles and plays to their and the music's strengths. Davide Sportiello plays keyboards and bass, Lorenzo Pasuitto is on guitar, and Gabriele Biz plays drums. Vocals of an angelic sounding female, Cecelia Petrimi who also plays piano, juxtaposed with a male vocalist, Stefano Sain, who uses various styles of singing are used to great effect.

Dueling male and female vocals are old hat, but SINHERESY refresh the style on “Event Horizon”. At times Cecelia Petrimi and Stefano Sain sound almost perfect together. In the opening track “The Calling” as Stefano finishes and Cecelia takes over there is a smooth transition that is refreshing. Although smooth, yet it is not the usual call and response type of singing. Cecelia sings like an angel while Stefano crosses different styles from clean to death metal style.

“Castaways” is a mellower track with the atmospherics helping to build to a faster tempo. “(R)evolution” is filled with excellent atmospherics, heaviness, and vocal interplay. Cecelia sings "we're running out of time" which is true for the story being told and the rest of the album. “Forbidden Desire” is heavy and soft with a lot of Cecelia and Stefano singing together. Their voices fit together perfectly, and that brings us to the closer in three parts.

“Event Horizon I: Gravity” is a short keyboard intro to “Event Horizon II: Entropy” which is the last full song. “Event Horizon III: Singularity” is another brief instrumental ending the album. Part II's music is eerily reminiscent of PAT BENATAR's song “Anxiety” (Get Nervous).  It is close enough I expected Pat (Cecelia) to whisper Get Nervous over and over. I would have been good with that as I am a huge PAT BENATAR fan.

After listening to the album “Event Horizon”, it makes me want to check out SINHERESY's first three albums. It is a refreshing listen that was not at all what I expected. I like the unexpected in music  because I end up liking it more. That is true here. Sinheresy has gained a new fan due to the original sound of their fourth album, “Event Horizon”. I am still thinking that is an Alien face hugger on the cover though.
