Hello! In this, my latest Philm Phreaks article, I’m going to be look at a DVD release of a movie from 2024 called “Scared to Death.”
This film has a couple actors with some serious horror credentials. Lin Shaye is the first of those. She’s probably best known to horror fans for the “Insidious” series. Bill Mosely from “House of 1000 Corpses,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2” and more is another member of the cast.
The story focuses on a movie cast and crew taking part in a séance in a notoriously haunted house. While that set up brings some intriguing angles, the human interactions, and particularly personal agendas lend more wrinkles.
The plot is tastefully complex, and full of twists and turns. I have to say that even at the end there were some things I wasn’t sure about. I won’t say more than that about it, except that I love that it left me wondering.
The movie isn’t extremely gory, but it is very creepy. The spooky atmosphere is great. And, while it’s not really bloody, it’s still got some great creature feature effects, and other elements that lean in that direction.
They manage to include some humor to lighten things up a little. The whole thing feels just a little like an 80s horror movie to me, and that’s a good thing.
This is one of my favorite films I’ve seen this year. I’m sure it’s one I’ll be watching more over the years. It’s the kind thing that should hold up well for repeated viewings. I really can’t tell you more about the plot, except that having a séance in a notoriously haunted location is just the kind of bad idea you would expect it to be, but it’s more involved than that.
The DVD doesn’t really have a lot of bonus materials, but when the movie is as good as this one, that really doesn’t matter very much.
