The Victor Frankenstein of New York Hardcore, AGNOSTIC FRONT, is back with a new full-length album via Reigning Phoenix Music called “Echoes in Eternity”.
Ironically—or maybe unfortunately for them—after 45 years of churning out politically charged hardcore and crossover thrash, these guys have never had more to be angry about! So, rather than winding down into a well-earned retirement, they’re ramping up and heading out on the road again to support this banger of an album. And luckily for us, everything here sounds accordingly.
If you’re familiar with later-model AGNOSTIC FRONT, then you’ll immediately recognize their anthemic brand of hardcore that leans into aggressive thrash territory. The thing that’s notable about “Echoes in Eternity”, though, is its huge sound. It’s the best sounding AGNOSTIC FRONT album in a long time—maybe ever. And that’s courtesy of their producer Mike Dijan and an aggressive mix by Zeuss at Planet-Z recording, a man who’s best known for working with heavier acts.
There are 15 songs here and all but one or two of them are great, with a variety of approaches to the band’s quintessentially fast, catchy, and heavy crossover style. The tunes that do fall short are the few that are generous with the overly earnest AxFx cheese this band can sometimes deliver. There’s surprisingly little of it on “Echoes in Eternity”, though, which is another example of why it’s a top-notch production.
There’s no telling how many more AGNOSTIC FRONT albums the future may hold. But this one surpasses any sensible expectations anyone should have at this point. As such, fans of hardcore, both old-school and new, should grab it.
