By Dr. Abner Mality
MUTILATED BY ZOMBIES, Iowa’s heaviest band (sorry, SLIPNUTZ), is no more. After a string of promising albums, each one better than the last, they blew up on the cusp of reaching the next level. R.I.P., MBZ...but rising from the ashes we have the grotesque LIQUIFIED DECOMPOSITION.
Josh DeMuth of MUTILATED BY ZOMBIES fame has got two new partners in crime as well as a drum machine. Instead of becoming more technical and melodic, they’ve gone the opposite direction, as “Filekeeper” is a fine example of chunk-blowing primitive death metal oozing with aggression. The strange name of their debut record makes sense when you realize that six of the songs are inspired by true crime stories from the TV show “Unsolved Mysteries” and the other six come from the TV version of “Tales From The Crypt”. Both shows are heavily sampled here.
The riffs are generally mid-paced to slow and extremely morbid, with occasional bursts of insane speed. The vocals of Matt Mihalakis are straight from the gutters of hell and often boosted by Josh’s own decayed tones in the background. So far we have a good recipe for a sickening death metal band.
The one downer here comes from the non-human member…those frickin’ computer drums! I’ve never been a fan of them except for industrial bands and this is no exception. During “Forensic Identification”, they sound like a typewriter gone berserk. Tinny and not heavy at all. At some times, they are tolerable, at others they are almost unendurable. This band needs to get a human drummer and quick! I am optimistic they can find one...the right guy will put LIQUIFIED DECOMPOSITION over the top.
As far as the tunes go, “Biological Warfare” and “Roadside Assistance” are my two favorites, with “Playing God” following closely behind. The whole album has a MORTICIAN meets MASSACRE feel that has an industrial touch due to the drums and frequent samples. This band has made a good start here...just work on getting a drummer.
