It’s well known these days that you have to have multiple bands if you want even a prayer of making a dime. Virtually no band outside of the legacy giants can do it on music alone. Here we have a solo project of David McMaster, guitarist in STREET TOMBS and drummer in SUPERSTITION, both of New Mexican vintage. CEMETERY REIGN is a repository of tracks that for one reason or another didn’t fit in STREET TOMBS and SUPERSTITION.
If there’s any distinction, it seems to be that CEMETERY REIGN is more obviously old school in style, with a very marked early 90’s feel. The type of band that seems to be popping up on a daily basis now. Well, McMaster hits the mark better than most. It’s straightforward stuff…a whiff of GRAVE here, a scent of MASSACRE there. Riffs are morbid and easy to get into. McMaster’s vocals are full of echo and reverb and sound like they were recorded in a cave, but are not as guttural as a lot of DM. I find they add a lot of atmosphere to the project.
No track is really bad, but none is overwhelmingly awesome either. “Grave Depression” and “Pendulum Clock” are my favorites and very solid old school death metal tracks. That’s a good description of “Confined To Time” in a nutshell.
