Can’t get much more evil than REVELATOR...or so this Canadian cult would have you believe. Upon listening to “Light The Devil’s Fire”, I was somewhat reminded of the wrestling character Danhausen, the nerdish grappler who is “very nice, very evil”. Danhausen is in on the joke. REVELATOR, I’m not so sure about.
This is not really a bad record, but it is a half-baked one. There are times when REVELATOR’s darkness shines through. There are more times when this is pretty much in one ear and out the other, despite the Satanic leanings. I can’t describe them as a full on black metal band, either first or second wave, although lyrically and visually the sure fit the bill. They’re not death or thrash metal all the way either. Nor are they of the DANZIG variety of rock n roll warlocks. Safest bet is to call REVELATOR a Black N’ Roll band who dip their toes in many metal pools.
First two tracks “The Numberless Mysteries of Nameless Entities” and “Death Serenade” are overwhelmingly bland and leave no impression. With “By The Whip”, we get a good injection of thrashy energy and this shows the kind of band REVELATOR could really be. The album follows with this mixture of unremarkable tracks broken up by occasional spots of (black) light. I liked the catchy and fun “Lest Thee Be Vexed” and “We Who Reign With the Devil” is a MIDNIGHT-ish slab of fiery oldschool BM. On the ending title track, they reach for a more epic and moody sound and almost make it.
Apart from that, the rest is really forgettable and I have a hard time remembering any of it. All stuff we’ve heard before, many times. There’s some potential here but in the end, there’s no revelation in REVELATOR.
