The rising moon of Dungeon synth is a warm welcome on many levels. The realm though, like any communal waterhole is becoming an encampment and crowding, making many sites to be taken and leaving others to serve as the old homestead places that could become like tourist attractions....rightfully so. If it were the real estate business of the sale of castles, ruins, and old keeps, it would become a gamble for more rural types. Much like one could see and still see with Dungeons and Dragons, there are different editions, and this is a genre ripe for good regression and tradition. I myself tend to like the older edition of the role playing series, enjoying the use of restrictions, rules, and the mystery and difficulty of ever getting too big in such a pond. I could genuinely go on for an entire compendium on these matters, writing a book of it all.
But we are here and now on this day here to hear ORNATORPET’s attempt to enter the realms of such legends. Based it seems on Scandinavian folklore and mythologies, the album opens with a building score of wintry retreat, soft and calming like hot cider. "Between the Galleries of Trees" sounds like it's naming whilst "A Memory of Fairer Days" chooses from the banks of keys the tones and moods needed to evoke from within itself a meaning. Most dungeon synth doesn't use vocals and this is no exception. For many it would greaten this field if such were used or spoken word- natural ambience would often enhance too...animal sounds, etc. The artist has said:
“Fordomdags” – meaning roughly ‘in former days’ – ties together with the songs and music, reflecting my vision for them. While the tracks may not sound as cohesive as my previous album, which followed a more logical thematic production, “Fordomdags” is instead a diverse collection of dungeon synth branches that are most dear to me.
This was a good listen, not too bad at all. A good one for the fireside and calm moments life seems to rob us of.
