Now we dive into the deepest abysses of the metal universe, into the chthonic depths below where even INCANTATION and ASPHYX dwell. This is the domain of ultra-cavernous death/doom where almost no light penetrates, but we will try to shed what light remains on three abysmal acts.
You wonder if HADOPELAGYAL sit around for weeks at a time trying to come up with impenetrable pseudo-scientific terminology for their song titles. I have no idea what a “zalmathic necroichorion” is, but it sure sounds Lovecraftian, doesn’t it? So does the gruesome music spit forth on their 4 song EP. Dense assaults of cavernous noise, sepulchral riffs and vocals with enough reverb to crack your brains. This mysterious duo are the most extreme of the three groups we are looking at here and recommended only to followers of the darkest death/war metal. If you really have the nerve to penetrate the most tortured depths of extreme metal, this is your band…even a relatively short EP is almost too much to take.
NEKUS from Germany I have encountered before and what a nasty dripping pile of mucus they were. On their split with Costa Rica’s BLOODSOAKED NECROVOID, they perform one massive track almost 20 minutes in length, “Dakhma”. To their credit, they manage to avoid boredom for almost all of that length. It’s a mix of mid-paced and funeral speed ugly gloom, actualy sounding more streamlined than their past material. But still horrid death metal! As for BLOODSOAKED NECROVOID, they waste 2 and a half minutes on the usual intro tripe before playing two tracks of slow, crawling death/doom. Effective at first, it started to wear pretty thin on me by the end. Unlike NEKUS, they don’t switch things up enough to keep interest.
Our trip to the deeps is over now. HADOPELAGYAL remain the most feral beast in the abyss while NEKUS is the most massive and BLOODSOAKED NECROVOID crawls in the mud at the bottom of the ocean.
