Although labelled as “doom metal”, PSYCHLONA is not really heavy or morose enough to warrant such a description. No dungeons or dragons to be found in this vicinity. “Stoner rock” and the nebulous term “desert rock” are much more apt labels for the music here.
It’s mildly entertaining but as with most bands of this ilk, just not heavy enough for me. Fans of FU MANCHU and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE should enjoy it. There’s a nice growth of fuzz on tracks like “Jasmine” and “Cut Loose”, mixed with psychedelic vibes and that odd laidback feeling you get from most desert rock outfits. A cool exception is the crunchy, hard-riffing thump of “Topanga”, which will make the head nod. “Kaleidoscope” has an odd early SABBATH groove to it, like something from “Sabotage” or “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”. On the opposite end of the scale, the album ending “Magic Carpet” and “Split” are more mellow and blissed out, with traces of PINK FLOYD. Throughout the album, the vocals are a chilled, pleasant but unexceptional monotone.
It seems pretty slight to me, but in no way would I call PSYCHLONA a bad band. I just need more of a kick to my tunes.
