“Reborn To Light” is the new second album from Power Metal act AEON GODS. I have to confess and say I have never heard of this band before listening to this. At first glance I saw the Egyptian costumes and the album art that’s your standard fare for this type of band and did not expect much. I love this genre but I am always aware of the over saturation happening and bands who are clones of others doing it better. So I went in with high hopes of something partially good. Well I was wrong, very wrong. By the Gods, very wrong indeed! Read on to learn more.
Right when I put on the first track it kicks off with a high power triumphant start and comes out with swords ready for a battle. This has everything that I love about power metal, from a high paced catchy chorus, angelic backing vocals, and some fantastic symphonic music backing up some commanding vocals. The band and the song are not breaking new ground but sometimes you just want some great music and this song “Birth of Light” brings all of what I love into a nice tight package to launch what should be a music journey through Egyptian lore.
The vocals are important with power metal. What I love about this band is they are not your typical high pitched style and more in the vein of Kai Hansen but not as raspy. There is a slight whine to them at times but it works with the music and both flow perfectly together. The whole album is a concept album but each song really stands out on its own and is not bogged down by the story. At first I noticed the songs had Part 1, Part 2, etc and I was scared it would be one of these albums where you don’t even know where you are at since things blend too much together. Not this album. Each song stands out on its own while being connected so this is a huge success.
This whole album is a bombastic blast of high energy fun and will make you want to listen to it many times. There is a lot to enjoy and a lot of catchy songs to make you go back and revisit. And while this is mostly a symphonic metal album it is not bogged down with over saturated keyboards and has an old school power metal vibe and feel to it. Where one may see the really cheesy costumes the band wears and expect goofier music, you would be wrong. The music stays away from the current trend that costume bands fall into with their music. There are a lot of touches from the days of old power metal that fuels this one and makes it really stand out from the crowd. Sadly I think the costumes will hold people back from taking it seriously or even trying this one out. But look past that and enjoy this top notch album.
Overall I did not expect to like this as much as I did. This is what the power metal scene needs and it is great to see a band hitting it hard and fast and not falling into the stereotypes that plague so many albums. This one kicks into high speed from the start and never stops. What I love also is that it never wears out its welcome and if you love high powered uplifting metal and makes you smile and feel good, this album is for you. It never falls into the corny side of things even though they dress in silly costumes. This is what a concept album should be, music first and then story. I look forward to see what this band does in the next few years because if they stay on track like with this album they could be a giant in the scene one day. Pick this up and take the journey through some Egyptian story telling by this German band.
