First thing I noticed: any band with “Miasma” in either its name or its album name is almost sure to be the most sickening mass of deathly sounds. CHECK!
Second thing I noticed: The album title is in Latin and contains the words “occulta” and “putridum”. Another sure sign this is either black or doom metal or probably both. CHECK!
Third thing I noticed: This is released via the Sentient Ruin label, who have an almost faultless knack for finding bands at the furthest reaches of the underground spectrum that don’t suck. DOUBLE CHECK!
This third observation put me at ease. MIASMA OF OCCULT LIMBS, despite its awkward name which I will now refer to as MOOL, is indeed a repulsive, horrid example of doom-tinged death metal that should delight the black heart of true dwellers of the subterranean realms. It’s a one man project from the misty mountains of Chile that throws everything from pulverizing grindcore to dragging death-doom and lightless soundscapes at the listener. There are only three tracks here, with two being lengthy monsters well over 10 minutes in duration. Even though I’m dead tired of super long tracks, MOOL makes it work, because you will hear various tempos, riffs and sounds in each epic. INSECT WARFARE style grind, INCANTATION putrid death doom, minor key and dissonant DISEMBOWELMENT worship are intertwined, along with stretches of bleak ambience and almost industrial racket. So the band really sums up the entire Sentient Ruin experience here…
As I’ve come to expect, the production here is perfect for what the music is….neither too digitally clear or too noisy or muck-crusted. It’s not that original, but it IS massively heavy...sample it if you dare!
