SEEP “Hymns To the Gore”

By Dr. Abner Mality

With SEEP, what you see is absolutely what you get. Anybody who sees the cover to this sucker and expects anything but knuckle-dragging gore-soaked death metal should probably be denied the right to vote and drive a car. Sole member Vomitus (that handle’s another clue) is very upfront about trying to recreate the repulsive/stupid gore death of the late 90’s and early 2000’s here and promises nothing but gore here.

It’s very much in the vein of doomy-paced MORTICIAN and FLUIDS, with the occasional cyclonic goregrind blast ala MALIGNANCY. First track is titled “Morbidly Obese” and that actually describes the sound. Slow, thick, fat and oozing riffs with vocal vomits to match. Kind of comforting in a Neanderthal way. And from there, we get more pleasant odes with titles like “Encased In Shit”, “Horrific Fetal Mutation” and “Gorging On the Gutpile”. Mr. Vomitus stick to the slower tempos and to me, it help makes the riffs catchier and easier to get into. There is no technicality on this album...none.

OK, it is quite stupid and some will see this as a step backwards, but to me, it hails back to a simpler time of death metal and for that reason alone, I give a bloody thumbs up to SEEP.
