LADY BEAST have a new record dropping March 28 via Dying Victims Productions titled “The Inner Alchemist” and it’s pretty damn good. In all honesty, I cringe when I get a promo to review by a “NWOTHM” band because I expect more retread and re-interpretation of a genre that doesn’t need it. The good news is, LADY BEAST defied my expectations and released a killer record. I’m even happier to say that “The Inner Alchemist” defies genre and boundary, it’s a great metal album in and of itself.
The first two songs drew me in. “Oracles Omen” channeled DIO while “Through The Eyes Of War” had a MOTÖRHEAD vibe running through it. Influence is cool, influence is good, I have no issue with that, it tells me something about a band’s musical identity and origins. My pet peeve is when bands crossover into “pale imitation” territory which LADY BEAST never did. What you hear on this disc is full metal worship, no cut and paste. I dig where this band is coming from.
“The Inner Alchemist” is pure metal cred, a great mix of speed and back to basics rock. Track five, “Crones Crossroads” might be the best song on this record exemplifying everything I’ve mentioned so far. Many traditional metal acts run afoul of bowing down to formula, but LADY BEAST doesn’t, every track is a rocker, nothing comes across stagnant or filler. If you’re looking for a heavy, riffy, “back to the roots of heavy metal” type record, ‘The Inner Alchemist’ is for you, it’s a must buy disc.
