Being reminded of a bygone musical era comes with a chance of sounding cliché, but these Weirdos are anything but! PREDECEASED have tapped into a great groove with hallmarks of some of the more well known early 80s punk bands like T.S.O.L. and their masterpiece “Code Blue” with riffage brought into the modern era. Their newest album “Weirdo Riffers” further evokes bands like BLACK FLAG, JESUS LIZARD, FUGAZI, THE CRAMPS and JANE’S ADDICTION. This album has a very rough sound that is at times chaotic, repetitive and edgy brought to us by Charlie Wyatt on guitar, George Coleman on drums and Jack Hartley on bass. All three members share lead vocals.
“Weirdo Riffers” is comprised mostly of singles released over the last few years along with a couple of unreleased tracks. Showcasing a band on the cutting edge of punk, hardcore and alternative with a heavy leaning, it is a great amalgamation of weirdness and edgy music surfing on the fringes of the aforementioned genres. PREDECEASED have emerged with great art for the ears.
They are a band whose music is chaotic in the sense the songs seem to go all over the place, and it is as if they just picked up their instruments for the first time. A cacophony of wildness while sometimes seemingly disjointed which works in their favor. Bringing to mind that some of the music sounds like the members were all in different rooms isolated from one another playing whatever, and mixed into an album of crazy music. Think PLASMATICS doing “Dream Lover” during the instrumental break, and you have this album.
“Weirdo Riffers” is repetitive in the aspect of their locking into a hypnotic groove. They haven’t just picked up their instruments for the first time, they are masters of heavy fringe music. It has a slightly unnerving edge to it while listening to the album. BUTTHOLE SURFERS come to mind in this manner because of how disjointed the music is, and the songs have that air of looping sounds.
PREDECEASED are edgy musically. They have odd sounds, odd riffs. “Weirdo Riffers” is an album full of starts, stops and great riffs that at times sound like a record skipping. Edgy in the sense of doing something musically that is not something ripped out of a playbook, yet it makes you feel like you are listening to something familiar from the edge.
“Weirdo Riffers” is a very consistent in its own way albeit crazy album full of high energy modern punk rock. I didn’t break the review down into individual tracks because it is better taken in aurally in one fell swoop. Upon first listen obviously I had plenty to write about besides a breakdown of songs because the album is very thought provoking. PREDECEASED have really put together a unique record, and it is definitely a top contender for weirdest release of 2025. It rocks chaotically. It hypnotically keeps you locked in on the music and screams. Edgy and on the outside of the norms. When chaotic, edgy or repetitive are talked about the definition should be these “Weirdo Riffers”, the fringe surfing PREDECEASED!
