KRYPT/ YOSEMITE IN BLACK
KRYPT “Great Spawn of the Worms of the Earth” EP
YOSEMITE IN BLACK “The Pursuit Of”
By Dr. Abner Mality
Terminus Hate City is a label that is new to me. Based on the two THC releases I’ve got in my hot little hands here, don’t expect any AOR or prog rock from this bunch. They like things raw and basic.
KRYPT is for real! Not to be confused with Finland’s KRYPTS or the more recent KRYPTICY, this Georgia band hits like an Israeli missile on a Gaza hospital. The sound is angry, rough and fast as hell, blurring the lines between thrash and death metal. Just four brief tunes on their debut EP, but it sure gets their point across. “Burden of the Beast” blasts forth with raging black metal riffs that are very deceptive, leading into bruising death/thrash. The bass is noticeably more upfront than I would have guessed. “Incinerate, Eviscerate” lives up to its title and features chunkier power chords to break up the speed. “Unrelenting” brings this brief but potent ass-kicker to a close. KRYPT is a band that could be up there with ENFORCED and WRAITH when it comes to newer thrash acts.
The oddly named YOSEMITE IN BLACK seems to draw most of its muse from rough and tumble hardcore. The REALLY rough stuff, like WEEKEND NACHOS and HARMS WAY. “In Pursuit Of” is like a punch in the mush with brass knuckles, with a lot of caveman brutality and sludgy guitar tone. Yet there are some little quirks that show its not just toughguy HC. “Robber Baron” leans more into catchy death metal while the title track has some really cool riffs and a jangly guitar sound the other tunes don’t have. The album ends with “Fade Out”, which is pure CROWBAR sludge with groaning death metal vocals. There’s just enough “songwriting” to differentiate YIB from pure hardcore. But make no mistake, you’ll get a lot of that here as well.
I can recommend both of these releases. Looks like Terminus Hate City is off on a good roll….
