No, Conrad Lant is not a member of CRONOS COMPULSION. But he might dig what they are doing here on “Lawgiver”. Especially if he’s still into bruising, primitive metal, which is the stock in trade for these Denver degenerates.
Often I complain about albums being too long, but with CRONOS COMPULSION, we have the opposite problem. “Lawgiver” seems to me like half an album. I know you want to leave your listeners wanting more, but I don’t think a couple of extra tracks would have hurt here. These guys play caveman death metal in mostly mid-paced and doomy mode, but the tracks blaze by like crossover punk and the “album” itself clocks in at less than 25 minutes. Short but nasty! This review will be the same…
They have an almost grindcore guitar sound, like CAUSTIC WOUND, but not grindcore speed. The grumbling vocals are so caveman that Neanderthals would be sophisticated vocal gymnasts compared to Wil Wilson’s growls. Cuts like “Gyre of Decaying Filth”, “Sun Devouring Wound” and the title track seem like they should be a minute or so longer, but still pack a punch. Only “Neolithic Meditations” has room to breathe and groove, coming in at over four minutes. “Incursion of Deific Chaos” brings things to a close with an almost MERZBOW blast of electronic noise agony...the gasp of a dying world.
CRONOS COMPULSION brings the sonic filth...I just kinda wish we got more of it, because they are seriously heavy.
