CREEPING DEATH     “Boundless Domain”

By Theron Moore

Mark June 16 on your calendar as the day a new standard of excellence was established in the world of metal. CREEPING DEATH dropped their sophomore record, “Boundless Domain”, and changed the game for everyone. Just when things started to look cookie cutter in metal, bands like CREEPING DEATH, FROZEN SOUL, and GATECREEPER have emerged as the heroes to rescue it.

Listening to “Boundless Domain” took me back to the days when the Texas metal scene, not just in Dallas / Fort Worth but statewide, was alive and breaking bands like GAMMACIDE, RIGOR MORTIS, SA SLAYER, etc. nationwide via indie labels and tape traders. CREEPING DEATH are now the face of that scene with a strong digital presence and even stronger touring schedule.

“Boundless Domain” is nine tracks of thrashy, bludgeoning, death metal. There’s nothing retro about the sound of this album but it did remind of what DEMOLITION HAMMER were doing in the heyday of their career, sewing together thrash and death metal into the hybrid genre it is today.

It’s been stated by the band that in the production of this record they set forth to incorporate more hardcore and grindy influences into this record to honor bands like POWER TRIP and IRON AGE but to be honest, I didn’t hear it. There’s a few POWER TRIP hooky riffs throughout “Boundless Domain”, especially in track eight, “Looming,” but the album is all CREEPING DEATH doing what they do best: snapping necks.

“Boundless Domain” is close to being a flawless record. The production’s great, the band is in top form, and the music is heavy AF. Track two, “Intestinal Wrap,” features George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher of CANNIBAL CORPSE, how do you go wrong there? You don’t, it’s a ripper. Yep, “Boundless Domain” is one of the – if not the best – record of the year so far. It’s guaranteed to punch you in the bread box and rattle a rib or two. Can’t wait to catch this band live.
