THE CROWN have released what could be one of the finest records they've ever made, “Crown Of Thorns”, released a month ago in October. I feel like THE CROWN have flown under the radar of everyone, fan and critic alike, for the better part of their career. Twelve albums in and THE CROWN is as vicious and bloodthirsty as ever.
They start the record off proper with "I Hunt With The Devil" and follow it up with "Churchburner"(Tne name of my old hot sauce!--Chef Mality) which ranks right up there as one of the best, thrashiest, most aggressive songs they've written and performed to date. Johan Lindstrand's vocals are pure bile and hate, backed by Mikael Norén’s drums which have never sounded better, and the twin guitar shred fest of Marko Tervonen and Marcus Sunesson.
Although THE CROWN have been called death metal, “Crown Of Thorns” is a solid, well-balanced mixture of blackened thrash, death metal, and just pure, full-on rage. Normally there's a few bumps in the road or a song or two which might be weak, but this album is nothing short of a bullseye.
Beginning with track one each song gets progressively better than the previous one. “Crown Of Thorns” pegs an 8 on a SLAYER scale of 1 to 10 in viciousness and brutality. The songwriting and musicianship on this record is super tight, and the overall craftsmanship – music and songwriting – is superior quality.
Look for nine songs and three bonus tracks: "Eternally Infernal," "No Fuel For God," and "Mind Collapse." Just when you think it can't get better, heavier, faster, eviler, THE CROWN go scorched Earth to close the album out. If you haven't guessed by now, this is a MUST FUCKING BUY and the BEST record of THE CROWN's long and glorious career.
