Pass me the vomit bag, Alice, because this stuff is SICK! Let’s face it, sports fans, when you see song titles like “Sentient Inorganic Mess”, “Morbid Infestation” and “Infected to Rot”, it don’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure out what’s coming your way. A certain weariness begins to set in as you prepare for more “old school death metal”, of which there is a surpassing amount, but as the tones of DISEMBODIMENT fill the year, you sit up and realize, this is the real fucking deal.
These Montreal maniacs take their influence from TRUE death metal such as Japan’s masterful COFFINS and ancient creeps like ROTTREVORE for their sound. Speed has nothing to do with it, but sickness does! And “Spiral Crypts” sounds really diseased and morbid. The album’s last track “Sentient Inorganic Mess” features a long sample from John Carpenter’s version of “The Thing”. Well, this band sounds like “The Thing” looks when it’s in mid-transformation. The slow riffs here just ooze with suppurating fluids and when the speed cranks up, it’s done with grisly palm muted arpeggios that are morbid to the core. Honest to God, there’s a section in the middle of the title track where eerie keyboards kick in with a sick riff and it’s a kind of creepiness that I haven’t heard in a long time.
Not everything clicks like that killer track...”Infected To Rot” is pretty generic and “Putrification” is also a little off to these ears...but the moments of real illness and morbidity are plentiful here. So even though cover art, song titles and the general theme has been done to fucking death, DISEMBODIMENT overcomes with the power of putridity! This is the pure stuff!
