GALGEBERG is a new name, but its members are well-known members of the Norwegian extreme music scene. Behind the kit we have none other than Bard Eithun, aka FAUST of EMPEROR fame. On guitar and vocals is Pete Vegem, aka Pete Evil from thrashers BLOOD TSUNAMI. And rounding out the trio is Peter Bōstrom, a veteran producer also known as “Bassflow”.
“Cerberus” is more of a mini-LP than a full length...or at least, I hope so, as the whole thing runs about 20 minutes. What we have here is a band that veers between classic Swedish death metal and equally classic Swedish punk. The HM-2 sound is raw as you would expect and GALGEBERG bash out their tunes with a brisk, almost perfunctory manner. First two tracks “Epicurean Paradox” and “Unparalleled Suffering” just seem to be very standard DISMEMBER worship without much in the way of memorability. I’d say LIK does that style a lot better. Then things start to get more interesting, as the punk influence becomes more pronounced. “Ode To O’Connor” still has the chainsaw guitar sound, but the riffs are catchier. Even better is “Kleptocrat Infestation”, which is where GALGEBERG comes into its own. The chugging section in the second half is particularly cool. “Hordes of Necrovores” wraps things up with what sounds like a head-on collision of DISFEAR and DISMEMBER.
This band has a little work to do. Production is quite routine and Pete Evil’s vocals are by the numbers. The anger is always present, but the songwriting only partially so. But there is the glimmer of better on the horizon for GALGEBERG if they can sharpen their knives a bit more.
