Not to be confused with the long-running thrashers from Cleveland, this bunch is a grimy trio from the Australian wastelands that plays an extremely aggressive mix of death, thrash and black metal. I don’t know what it is about Australian bands, but there is a peculiar quality to them that immediately makes me think of the Land Down Under.
There’s nothing particularly unique about what DESTRUKTOR is doing, but somehow they manage to be catchy and full of hooks even in their most over the top moments. ANGELCORPSE is a fair comparison that could be made, as well as fellow Aussies like CAULDRON BLACK RAM and DESTROYER 666. The lineage of Australian bands going batshit bonkers and hooky at the same time goes all the way back to HOBBS’ ANGEL OF DEATH and ARMORED ANGEL DESTRUKTOR are keeping that tradition alive...they hit like an atomic missile with the manic “Speaking With The Dead” and yet the riffs stick in your brain. “Writhe In Pain” is just pure Australian war metal while the title track ends with a martial steel-toed stomp.
I do think things start to thin out by the end of the album, as “Beyond The Bleakness” and “Reap What You Sow” border on blandness...the hate is there, but not the hooks. Final track “The Path of Lucifer” makes a nice recovery, though...this one is gloomy and majestic, not blazing fast but potent nonetheless. All in all, DESTRUKTOR emerge as an archetypal Australian war metal band.
