This train is close to running off the rails and into your lap, but they just manage to keep things together. VIOLENT OMEN is a technical thrash band from Ukraine that actually has quite a long history and connection to other Ukrainian bands. This is my first go-round with them and if you like a lot of crazy time changes and clockwork precision with your thrash, you should find this to your liking.
It comes in at a lean 34 minutes and change and that’s good, because 50-60 minutes of this style would get your brain plumb tuckered out. Right away you’ll notice some similarities to CORONER, MEKONG DELTA and even a bit of PESTILENCE with the frantic but discrete riffing. The bass guitar playing is VERY prominent but since Serg MP’s skill is spot on, that’s not a distraction. I wish I could say the same for Serg’s vocals…the wild high pitched yelping fits the manic nature of the music at first but gets a little tiresome as the album carries on. A little variation in style would help VIOLENT OMEN even more.
When the band is on target, they are very good indeed. My favorites here were the delirious sounding “Killdozer Rampage” and the final thrashing sprint of “Telling Lies”. A few serene moments crop up in “Path Of Illumination” and “Unit 731” but they don’t last long before we’re off to the races again.
A solid thrasher from VIOLENT OMEN, playing a style we don’t really hear all that much of anymore.
