TELOMYRAS put out a pretty good EP back in 2023 which was a great kick off for the band. I was looking forward to hearing this next release since there is a lot of talent in the band. So when given the chance to review this new self released album I was really excited to see what TELOMYRAS had in store for me. Having seen the band live and knowing what they can do there was a lot of interest with this one for me.
There is a lot of change and growth in this first full length. Stylistically there are also a lot of changes from the EP. If you heard the EP, it was more in the traditional metal with touches of power metal and strong vocals. The vocalist Sammie is a classically trained opera singer so you know she has the range and power and is backed by a very talented bunch as well. This new album kind of flips the switch on style and now the band has gone into a more moodier tone. This new album is very complex and filled with layers upon layers. This is not the type of album you drive around listening to for easy listening. This is the type of album that grows on you after a few listens. It seems the band really took the time to work hard on this one and breaking the mold and rebuilding and growing into a stronger unit.
The album's first song “Reckoning” kicks it off with a more upbeat pace which really reminds me of mid 2000 era THERION. The vocals are more haunting with the music pulsating behind it. It builds the mood and there is a lot of it. This song is a good gateway to the rest of the album and what to expect. Each song does a great job of being different but still not losing the emotion and depth.
The rest of the album is packed full of strong vocals with a slight gothic vibe to them. The songs bounce around on the doomy side with songs like “Witch” to more standard metal fare with “The Altar.” None of the songs are generic and cookie cutter. There is a lot going on in each one. The title track “Duskfall” is a more somber moody one that breaks up the pace of the album.
Overall, the album is a must have for fans of moodier progressive stuff. If one was to compare TELOMYRAS to other bands…which is kind of hard since they did a great job of doing something different… I would say they are a good mix of THERION, SANCTUARY, UNTO OTHERS and bands of this ilk. I do think if they can find their fanbase with this new sound they will do really great. There is a lot of mood, power and deep heavy stuff happening. If you want something different I would highly suggest checking out this new album by TELOMYRAS. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
