Canada’s WARSENAL dropped their latest record, “Endless Beginnings…”, back in April via Massacre Records. It’s solid thrash, it checks all the boxes, and it sports — in my opinion anyway — a nice little EXCITER influence that I hear all up and down this disc. But is it good? Did I like it?
“Endless Beginnings…” is OK. If they were at Milwaukee Metalfest and I wasn’t rushing around to see another band, I’d check out WARSENAL. Take that as a compliment since I usually go upstairs and chill at the bar for a bit EVEN while other bands are playing.
WARSENAL is thrashariffic, and their new record will get you where you need to go, but it left me wanting more. I liked what I heard, I just needed the fellas to throw down and go harder. I heard flashes of that throughout this record, but it never fully got there, if that makes sense.
The first track, “Mass Grave Mass,” starts this disc out right by ripping us all a new one. Bands take note — this is how you start a record. “Flying Fortress,” is a little more of the same, and it drew me in, kept me connected like it should, but it never went to the next level. That’s my big complaint with “Endless Beginnings…” — you expect it to explode, like EXCITER did, the big influence I hear throughout this album, and WARSENAL never quite gets there.
I’m torn. I like this record, but it left me wanting more. It’s a good thrashin’ time, but I feel like WARSENAL has so much more to deliver on future records. It’s there — they just need to find it and work the fuck out of it. Stream this record, buy it, give it a shot — there’s a lot of potential here.
