What are we to MAKE of this? A brand new sludge/post-metal band made of scene vets and located in Durham, NC. Is it something we need more of or just another brick in the million mile wall of bands providing “content”?
One thing’s for sure, they are not in a hurry on the first track “The End Of The Night”. This one has some low-key jangle and swirl for about five minutes before the thick mass of sludge hits in an EYEHATEGOD fashion, coupled with weary grumbling from Scott Endres. It’s effective but nothing we haven’t heard before and it took a long time to get cracking. “The Judge” is more of a straight up rocking cut, nothing fancy about it. “Forking Paths” to me just sounds dreary as hell and not in a good way…bland post-metal noodling and an ultra-typical riff once the heavy kicks in. A long slog through barren ground.
That makes “Chimera” and “The Spectacle” both a wake up call, as they are the most power packed tracks on the album; they are the nexus where CLUTCH beard rock and THE OBSESSED doom-sludge collide. A welcome injection of energy. “The Augur” ends the album where it began, with a long twangy buildup and very familiar sludge riffs.
MAKE is kind of in the middle zone for me, certainly not bad but really nothing that has its own identity yet. This is the debut, though, so keep that in mind. MAKE of it what you will…
