Having been listening to this band from their first EP release to this new album that sits in front of me, I was trying to think of a way to write a non-biased review for this new era of the band. GREYHAWK, for those who may have not yet heard of them, are a band from the Seattle area who play a great mix of power metal and traditional metal. What makes this band so special is that they have mastered the art of this and fans from either side can love and appreciate what they are doing and love the songs without feeling they are breaking some unwritten rule that you can’t enjoy one or the other.
GREYHAWK has always had their own unique style and sound that pushed them to the forefront and in 2024, their singer at that time left the band to follow his career. For a lot of bands this could kill and ruin a band who has mastered a certain sound. We have all seen bands get new singers and it is never the same. So when “Warriors of Greyhawk” came my way for review I was a little scared to listen in fear of it not standing up to the past albums. A new era sometimes is never a good thing. But let’s go and see how things stack up.
The first song “Ascension” is a perfect way to kick off this massive album of power metal. The song keeps the same magic of the GREYHAWK sound but now with new singer Anthony Corso making it something new and fresh. The band didn’t just try to get a singer who could mimic their old singer Rev’s amazing vocal style, they got someone who can sing with his own style and range with still keeping it in the band’s sound. Replacing Rev is not an easy task, but Anthony does this by flying high as an eagle and almost making it look easy to sing for a band like this, which it is not. The song has your standard great chorus’s and hooks and more on the power metal side and the vocal high ranges really make this one a keeper.
“Land Of Ashes” kicks things into super high speed and really sets the mood that the band is not holding back with this new era. It has all the things that make a great song in my book, from the gang sing along chorus, energetic guitars, pounding drums and bass! This is one that needs to be in the live shows. By now anyone who was worried that GREYHAWK would not be the same can relax. The band is on fire with this release and I am sure it will end up on many top 10 list at the end of 2026.
The next wave of songs on this album play off each other in a great way from never sounding the same or too much of one thing. You still get some of your epic metal style songs like the title track “Warriors of Greyhawk” to power metal anthems like “Hyperspace” and so much more. I think my only mild complaint with the new album and it isn’t even a real complaint is having two 6 minute songs close off the album in a more somber mood. I like the song “Eternal Quest” but would have loved a fast one to close it all off making me wanting more which I already do but you get what I am saying. This album pushes more of the power metal side of the band and that is a great thing. It is a fun listen and the songs are not just fluff, there is a lot going on in each one and upon multiple listens you will catch more and more great stuff layered in them.
I highly recommend to anyone wanting to listen to some great music to run and order this asap and you will not be disappointed. This new era for the band is going to be great and I am excited to see where the band will go with this album. This album will make you want to grow a long beard and go on adventures, which is funny since only two members have beards. Hopefully Darrin the bass player reads this to get a good laugh. I am so glad they are getting the attention they deserve and “Warriors Of Greyhawk” will definitely put them on the map for more people hopefully.
