Here’s a brisk little shot of melodic thrash metal, courtesy of a Swedish band that’s on their third album. The sound is sharp and clean, but hits some extremely high velocities at times. They start out rather rabid and gradually become more composed and accessible at the end. I think I might have done it in the opposite way, myself…
They can sure play. They list one of their influences as DISSECTION, which is a bit unusual, but I can certainly hear the sad black melancholy of that band in the title track and “A Soul To Cope”. That actually works well for them. Another influence is KREATOR and that makes more sense. You can hear the more recent and complex KREATOR in tunes like “Triumph of Pain” and “Mountain’s Gaze”. The drums on this thing boom like cannons…it’s everything the guitars can do to get heard over them.
The bloodthirst present in early tracks like “Darkened Sphere” and “Eyes of Wrath” deserts the band on the last third. “Stain of Roses” is an instrumental that’s almost all synth in the early part and still pretty melodic once the metal kicks in. “Mountains Gaze” also has more restrained parts along with speedy thrash. The record ends with “I Know The Fire Still Burns” and this sounded for all the world like something from the last couple of METALLICA albums, right down to the vocals of Adrian Tobar, which have a very Hetfield-like lilt here.
“Forever Feared” gets the job done if you like a well produced mix of angry thrash and less manic metal, but ETERNAL EVIL is probably not going to get much past this level.
