When I first heard of this release, I must say that I was very excited to hear it or to buy it on vinyl. The mighty CATHEDRAL; legends in their own right, and saying this is a massive understatement. After years had passed and I awaited something; a live album and rarities like “The Serpent's Gold “double album...that album alone was one of my favorite purchases.
And now here we are to believe they somehow lost a 30 minute song. This I can honestly believe as, being a musician myself and in the past recording hours and hours of music I know how one could get lost in it all...And especially under the influence of certain substances. I heard this when I first had a chance and couldn't make it through it when it appeared on Youtube. Now here I sit again with no expectations for a proper review. It's not as bad as I remembered on the first listen but I can certainly see why it was forgotten about. Lee was never really thought of as a memorable vocalist by most of the people I have known over the years, and though I can't agree with those sentiments, I can say that he doesn't dispel this notion here.
At times the lyrics seem a bit tired and uninspired when Lee is at a bad point. I must say that hearing this again I like it better now than the first listen, but then again I am a pretty hardcore fan who owns almost everything they have done and I have recorded music with one of the original members on more than one occasion. But is it just Lee? The great Riffmaster General and guitar wizard Gary Jennings sometimes seems a little of the same but then again, the man is a living guitar riff and highly underrated. Here it sure is good to hear him and the boys again. This man might not be a Malmsteen in certain regards but he can write guitar parts that rival any guitar player now or before in the multiverse. In the end, this is all that matters: we get a rare unreleased track that isn't bad really. The album cover is classic and has been passed around the bend many times. Here we have a 30 minute track that leaves one longing for another rarities album or at least some kind of live dvd or boxset.
