GRUESOME are back for the attack with new record, “Silent Echoes”, due out June 6 via Relapse Records. “Silent Echoes” finds the band laying down a heaping helping of gut punching death metal but this time around, with a more mature, accessible sound. Fear not, the lads are still chasing the god of gods, DEATH..., no ,not the god of death, the band once led by the late, great Chuck Schuldiner.
If the chase is better than the catch, as MOTÖRHEAD said, I hope GRUESOME continue the path they’re on, because with every new record they release they continue to grow, get better, and throw a wider net over the music they’re making. “Silent Echoes” is proof of this.
If you dug the primal slabbage of previous releases it’s still alive and well here but GRUESOME’s sound is more forward leaning, with a tighter, crisper, cleaned up metal assault. GRUESOME has stated that “Silent Echoes” was written and recorded in the spirit of DEATH’s 1991 progressive death metal masterpiece, “Human”.
“Silent Echoes” is all about brutal, fast, and technical riffage. I’d even go so far to say that you can hear hints of “Individual Thought Patterns”, “Symbolic” and “The Sound Of Perseverance” throughout this record as well... at least, that seems the direction GRUESOME seem to be moving in. It’s amazing that this band, who’ve been around for a decade now, can jump from one DEATH era to another with each record they release, while still retaining their originality and not crossing the line into cover band territory.
As vocalist/guitarist Matt Harvey has stated about this album, “there’s less winking at the audience on this one,” and it shows. Standout tracks include “Frailty,” “Voice Within The Void (Astral Oceans) and “Silent Echoes.” The tech guitar riffing, the sheer brutal thunder the band brings to every song makes “Silent Echoes” a must buy indeed.
