By Dr. Abner Mality
Another day brings another knuckle-dragging example of what's come to be known as caveman death metal. This tide is seemingly never ending and is a sure sign that the bubble of this trend will burst sooner rather than later. These fellows hail from Montreal, that chilly citadel of metallic might.
For all the complaints that could come to mind, they all pale in comparison to the power of the riff. And goddammit, SCORCHING TOMB has their share of them. A great example comes in "Skullcrush", where after about a minute, there's a riff change to a bone-breaking groove that takes your breath away. You can't fight that sort of power. The song features an appearance by Devin Swank from SANGUISUGABOGG, who arguably started the modern version of this movement.
Another thing I have to say about "Ossuary" is that as far as sound quality goes, this thing is great. Those lava-like chugs come across with maximum girth and power while the drums slap like crazy. This is the classic sound of death metal. And while "Ossuary" is almost nauseatingly unoriginal in both sound and lyric, tracks like "Feel The Blade" and "Diminished To Ashes" just plain deliver when it comes to meat-and-potatoes DM. I can't imagine SCORCHING TOMB is going to be a "breakout" act, but they are ultimately a satisfying one.
