Austin, TX rockers MEAN MISTREATER are gearing up to release their sophomore album “Do Or Die” February 21 via Dying Victims Productions. “Do Or Die” is the follow up to their debut disc “Razor Wire” self-released in early 2023 which set a pretty high standard for MEAN MISTREATER to meet this time around but hot damn, if they didn’t just meet it but exceed it.
Here’s what I really like about this band and this record – MEAN MISTREATER are real. “Do Or Die” is real. Ok, I won’t call this terrific NWOFTHM since the band doesn’t like that term, how about I call it a metal ripper with a nod and a wink to a style of music we’ve all come to respect and cherish? How about it sounds more real and genuine than a lot of poser bands overrunning the scene right now who don’t sound 1% as good as the music MEAN MISTREATER have made with “Do Or Die”?
At eight songs in 27 minutes there isn’t a bum track on this album, nor is there time for one. I’ve been trying to scour this album to find favorite songs and truthfully, they’re all equally good but if I had to choose one the title track is a banger, one which I’m sure will find a permanent slot in the band’s live set for years to come. “Do Or Die” is good, pure heavy metal without any frills. The band isn’t trying to be something they’re not; they’re doing and playing what comes naturally to them and that element comes through loud and clear on this record. “Do Or Die” is a must buy disc and although it’s still early in the year I can’t see how this won’t land on every critics end of year list.
