Looking for a death metal album with teeth? This one sounds like a flesh-eating ghoul sinking its fangs into your tender flesh and ripping away. It’s fast, it’s raw, it’s morbid and it doesn’t waste any time.
What strikes me the most about “Mortuary Cult” is the sheer rawness. It sounds like it was done in one take, with very little refinement and with the instruments pushed way into the red. It’s not “cavernous” death metal because it’s too quick and rabid for that, yet there is a morbid feel clinging to the whole thing. GOETIA will appeal to those who like death, thrash and black metal with maximum filth; it has aspects of all those subgenres. The vocals of bassist Matt Scott lean much more towards the blackened end of the spectrum…more shrieky than guttural
This is not a long record nor should it be. Nine tracks plus an intro…album ender “Eternal Samhain” is the only track that ventures into doomy catacombs. Most like “Excarnation” and the title track are no bullshit fast rippers, mixing total blurs with catchy riffs and slicing, to the point guitar solos from Demir Soyer.
I like what GOETIA have done on “Mortuary Cult”. This is a band that might really make a mark in the raw extreme metal scene.
