I know our resident God of Thunder Thor didn’t think too highly of one of EMBRYONIC AUTOPSY’s recent offerings and while I respect Ol’ Winghead’s opinion, I was curious to do my own investigation of these gory American death metallers led by OPPRESSOR and SOIL member Tim King.
I can kind of see where Thor was coming from, as this is very much in the footsteps of CANNIBAL CORPSE and SUFFOCATION without quite reaching the level of those bands. But if you are a big fan of both Floridian and New York style death metal, this will be hard to resist. It’s a brutal onslaught of high speed mayhem that hits like a herd of rabid mammoths on the loose. The speed on tracks like “Bathing In Entrails” and “Burst Ovarian Cyst” virtually obliterates coherent riffing and Marco Fimbres’ drumming doesn’t sound altogether natural.
But when that coherent riffing finally raises its horned head, EMBRYONIC AUTOPSY is at its best. “Aborted In the Aztec Temple” is a true monster of rhino-like power, a truly crushing track. That’s the album’s best, but “Zombified Infants of Roswell” is just a smidge behind…another keeper. One experiment with slower tempos that doesn’t work is the album closer and title track, a dreary ballad that ends things on a bad note.
One thing that fascinated me was the incredibly gross and guttural growls of Tim King himself. This guy is on another level when it comes to low-pitched subhuman vocalizations. This will be make or break for many people, but I found it weirdly compelling if incomprehensible. As for the lyrics, you may have deduced that they are pretty much the usual juvenile gore.
If you dig the CANNIBAL CORPSE/HATE ETERNAL style, I can recommend EMBRYONIC AUTOPSY for a good quick fix.
