The movie under my eye this time around is a blu-ray of a film from Full Moon called "Aimee: the Visitor." I think I might definitely be the target demographic for this movie. I'm a big Full Moon fan, and have been since the heyday of the company when the movies were straight to VHS video.
It goes deeper than that, though. I think AI is one of the biggest existential threats we as a species face. I even published a collection of stories about AI recently called "AI Stories." So, this movie, about an AI named "Aimee" seems to be made just for me. Well, given how effective I found this movie to be, that might be true.
Let me get one thing out here right at the start. I guess I should be making these disclaimers to these movie. Yes, the dog dies in the movie. Yes, he's a cute dog. No, he didn't really die. It's a story. There is a whole website devoted to telling you if the dog dies or not, though, so not sure I need to state that in these reviews or not. Given that it is important enough to some people, though, maybe I should be mentioning it. Sorry I haven't in the past. By the way, I get it. I can watch people get killed in these movies like crazy, but you kill an animal in one of them, and it hits a lot harder. Still, I get that it's a piece of fiction and the dog is alive and well after they are done making the movie. (People used to easily make this distinction, but in this weak day and age, hypersensitivity is the norm.--Dr. M)
Faith West plays AImee
With that out of the way, let's look at the actual movie. This thing is really great. It has a lot of suspense, tension and creepiness. Aimee is like the ultimate stalker. There is a lot of sexual content to the film and some nudity, so if that bothers you, you might want to avoid it. There isn't a ton of gore. There is plenty of menace, though.
The main actors in the film all put in solid performances. I have to say that the AImee character felt both real and realistic. It's not a big stretch beyond the real life virtual assistants, making it feel quite possible. And, honestly, I think something like AImee will be a reality soon, if it isn't already in some computer lab. The AI threat in this movie seems real.
This film is thought provoking and tense. Yet, it's also so entertaining. For those who think Full Moon can't be relevant in our modern world, I challenge you to watch this one. It might be the best movie Charles Band and Full Moon have done in the 21st Century.
There aren't a lot of bonus features here, but people buy movies for the movie, not the bonuses. This film is one that will stick with you long after it's over, and you'll probably find yourself going back to over and over again.
