By Dr. Abner Mality
“Social Ruin” comes screaming in like a band saw cutting through sheet metal. It’s off-key, disorienting and almost shocking with its noisy assault. A whole album like this would be unendurable, but thankfully MISANTHROPIC AGGRESSION from Georgia are a better and more versatile band than that. This winds up being a dizzying and punishing stew of subterranean extremity.
The band lists its influences as CELTIC FROST, MORBID ANGEL, GRAVE, HIS HERO IS GONE and IMPETIGO and to their credit, that sounds just about on the money. Now it’s not all those bands at the same time. The tracks are diverse in how they combine those influences and also in their favor, this thing sounds as grounded and raw as you can get. The title track follows “Social Ruin” and is altogether more catchy, a crusty punker like something from the Swedish scene. The vocals are kind of pinched and snide, not the usual guttural grunt. “Bliss” brings the CELTIC/HELLHAMMER crush and because of such emerges as one of my favorites.
It’s good when you get an album where you don’t know quite what’s coming your way next. “The Gates of Hell” is a filthy mid-paced grind, “Intentional Under Performance” and “Winner of the Franchise Wars” are more crustpunk in feel and the 7 minute plus “The Serpent and The Sickle” is an agonizing slow slog of sludge until the final third brilliantly dials things up. The album ends with the near epic “Eusocial Demesne”, which almost has a black metal feel to some of it and ends with a wash of church organs.
This all has a super gritty and real feel throughout. The lyrics are incredibly bitter and the rapidly aging Dr. Mality almost took “Boomer Death” personally. There is both bite and variety here...MISANTHROPIC AGGRESSION and “Insect Politics” should not be lumped together with the vast grey mass of typical death metal content!
