Santa Fe New Mexico death thrashers, STREET TOMBS, dropped “Existence Is Corruption”, August 21 via Carbonized Records. What's a good way to describe this record? How about trench warfare in World War I, that sums it up well. “Existence Is Corruption” is total moshy, thrashy, BOLT THROWER grindy mayhem. You want musical destruction? STREET TOMBS delivers it - and then some!
There is nothing particularly subtle about “Existence Is Corruption”, and that is precisely the point, and thank god for it! STREET TOMBS have no interest in polishing the filth from death metal. They celebrate it with this disc.
Across eight tracks and just over 33 minutes, “Existence Is Corruption” attacks from the intersection of old-school death metal, thrash and crust punk. The riffs are raw and primal, the drums over torque it all with a down and dirty, vicious d-beat, and Damian Jacoby’s vocals sound like he’s been dragged through the desert with a throat full of broken glass and two shiners to boot.
“Existence Is Corruption” boasts plenty of speed, but it’s how well STREET TOMBS understand the death/thrash/grind beat and riff that makes this record special. It reeks of brutal violent energy. “Pestilent Storm” opens the record with an immediate sense of hostility and aggressiveness ramped up, and out of control. “Deceptor” and “Septic Values” are pure grind mayhem and terror with a pit mentality that’ll kill posers ten feet away.
STREET TOMBS aren’t reinventing death/thrash/grind with “Existence Is Corruption”, they’re showing you what this genre is meant to sound like – ugly, with a “fuck you” attitude, and unapologetically underground. Stream it, buy it, patch it on. This is among the year’s top five best extreme metal releases to date.
