Italian grindmob UNDERTAKERS have been putting stiffs in the ground since 1991, around the same time Mark Calloway began dressing up and bringing an urn to the wrestling ring. I don’t care what your music is like, that sort of longevity deserves respect.
These guys put the “core” in grindcore, as there is a very strong hardcore bent to their extreme style. There’s speed here, but the focus seems more on chunky beatdown riffs that make you feel like beating the hell out of your landlord. The lyrical approach is very much against the high and mighty…it is political and from the streets. Enrico Giannone is the bellowing voice of the beast, churning forth rough and low growls invoking hatred of the 1%. A look at the song titles tells you where UNDERTAKERS is coming from…”Plutocracy Era”, “Iron Regime”, “Rise Of Resistance”, “Just Keep Fighting”.
Musically, it gets the job done but never really reaches the next level of grindcore…it’s too simple and “chug” based for that. “Bodies’ Supermarket” and a furious “Collapse Control” bring more of a death metal sound, which is welcome. Most tracks are about two and a half minutes, nothing over the 4 minute mark, so they keep it nice and compact.
This is still pretty fierce for a band that’s been around 30 plus years. Get buried by “Global Dominion”!
