Methinks someone in this French outfit is a Star Trek fan, as “Balance of Terror” was the name of the classic episode that introduced the Romulans. In that episode, the Romulans used a devastating weapon to reduce Federation outposts to dust. Perhaps it was the music of BALANCE OF TERROR that did the trick.
This band is in constant ATTACK mode and never lets up their assault. That can be good or bad, depending on your outlook. If you are looking for full blast DYING FETUS, CRYPTOPSY or MISERY INDEX death metal annihilation you’re in luck. If you get easily bored by the same type of music without brakes, this won’t do much for you. I find myself somewhat in the middle of this.
As with all Transcending Obscurity releases, production and performance is never an issue. Everything is as clear as a bell and it’s pretty obvious that B.O.T. can play even at the fastest speeds. And there are certain bits where the band shows a flair for unusual riff flourishes and melodic solo patterns, best seen on the album’s best track “Vulgar, Old and Sick”, which I suspect is about a certain American Idiot-in-Chief. Trouble is, these cool little touches are swallowed in an ocean of typical American death metal brutality that we’ve heard before. The vocals are the “BREE-BREE-REEEE” or “HURGHAMURGHALURGH’ impenetrability of slam death metal.
At the end of the day, we have a band that’s an absolute death metal wrecking crew but a rather anonymous one. Keep working at it, it will come…
