If you like your death metal served up in Swedish style, loaded with chainsaw guitar, doomsday riffs and whisps of melody, put in an order for CRYPTORIUM. This record will indeed go through your bowels like an out of control weedwhacker.
This is the real deal. And no, Rogga Johansson is nowhere near this one, which is a bit of a relief. CRYPTORIUM draws from the expected greats of the genre…DISMEMBER, GRAVE, ENTOMBED…and also from some of the more overlooked Swe-death bands like WOMBBATH, SORCERY and yes, the 1001 Rogga-bands. It’s an album that sounds familiar but which changes things up enough to keep you on your toes. And it sounds like Tomas Skogsberg himself was manning the sound desk for the record!
Lots of highlights here. The title track sounds like DISMEMBER at its most virulent and unhinged, but Fabian Larson’s growls have a “drier” tone than Matti Karki. “Rivers Of Celestial Blood” is a filthy blast, with crazed solos appearing and disappearing ala AUTOPSY. “In Bitter Remorse” and “Concrete Internment” remind me of GRAVE’s icky brand of morbid atmosphere, with the latter having an absolutely killer chug. But the centerpiece of the album is “Revolting Obsession”, which puts everything together in a song packed with riffs screaming “SWEDISH DEATH METAL!” in a giant dripping font. This is a track worthy of the masters!
Pure as water from a mountain stream (except that it’s pure oozing gore!), “Through The Bowels of Ceaseless Dissonance” is the best Swedish DM record so far this year!
