Who let these dogs out?! For once, the press sheet does not exaggerate; they are described as “raw, primitive and unapologetically violent”. And so they are! Despite hailing from Stockholm, MUTATION does NOT sound like the typical Swedish chainsaw death metal associated with that town. Instead, they play a furiously rabid type of olde death metal that owes much to “Altars”-era MORBID ANGEL, HELLWITCH, BLOODSTORM and MALEVOLENT CREATION.
They not only nail the production of those times, but they go for broke and the untamed essence of early death metal. Take a listen to “Necromantical Holocaust” and you are listening to a ten ton semi packed with nitro getting ready to bust through the guardrail and crash a thousand feet below. Screaming solos pop up literally everywhere and seem like animals trying to escape a cage. Don’t expect doomy passages or even much chugging here…every track is packed with crazed energy including the vocals.
This is a case where atmosphere and execution trumps originality…there’s such a chaotic fervor to “Pestilent Whore” and the like that you are carried away. Only the intro, a creepy ambient piece bolstered with wailing guitar, offers any respite. For once, I’m glad we have a Swedish band who does NOT sound Swedish…MUTATION is out for blood!
