Over the years, Sweden has been home to some great crustpunk/d-beat bands like WOLFBRIGADE and ANTICIMEX. These bands are kissin’ cousins to Swedish death metal and were a huge influence on that sound. Well, the Swedes haven’t lost a step with BŐDEL. This act is crustier than a 3 day old scab and even more obnoxious.
Although BŐDEL is a new name, its members are well entrenched in the Swedish punk and death metal scenes. Guitarist Arvid and drummer Micke are members of THE CROWN while bassist Bromander has done time with PASTORATET and THE LIPTONES. As for lead vocalist, Arvid didn’t have to look far: his 19 year old daughter Leya does the honors. And boy, does she scream her head off on “Dődsbringaren”. Not in a death metal way, but just pure angry lung abuse. Although the lyrics are all in Swedish, so she could be reciting the recipe for cinnamon buns for all I know.
The album features 12 tracks of crispy crusty punk done the right way, with raw guitars, simple riffs, angry screams and d-beat drumming on a dime. The longest track “Ångel Af Dőd” seems like an epic at 3:29; it’s also one of the heaviest. A lot of the riffs used here have been heard before, but they are delivered with conviction…”1789”, “Dőbygd” and the title track all scorch along the tracks like out of control trains. BŐDEL keeps things basic and brutal, they way they should be.
Another name to join the pantheon of great Swedish punk bands? Don’t bet against it!
