REBURIED has much the same lineup as the Pacific Northwest sludge/doom band UN. A couple of years ago, they saw where the money was going and became REBURIED, getting aboard the caveman death metal train. The result is an album that’s as by the numbers as you can get in this realm, yet sometimes effective despite the extreme boilerplate nature of their music.
This is definitely the kind of knuckle-dragging, icky stuff that’s blown up the last few years. There’s resemblances to old school bands like AUTOPSY, OBITUARY and INCANTATION as well as the new breed like 200 STAB WOUNDS and SANGUISUGABOGG. Vomit-inducing vocals, easy riffs more on the mid-paced and slow side and a vile, downtuned guitar sound are the keys. As for any trace of originality, “Chainsaw Ritual” tells you all you need to know. The song starts with the sound of a chainsaw revving up and a woman’s scream. Wow, I’ve never heard that before…
Nonetheless, gotta give credit where it’s due. REBURIED can get the job done. The title track is a thundering rhino of a song that no OSDM fan can resist and the riff to “Pestilence Fog” is so cool and quirky, it will put a smile on your face like it did mine. The only track that’s a ringer is the minor key and subdued instrumental “Cold Blood” which is not only a surprise, but surprisingly effective in its laidback way. That’s the trace of a band that might want to be more than just the current trend.
