ICE GIANT

ICE GIANT     "Ghost of Humanity"

By Dr. Abner Mality

The sheet says ICE GIANT combines the best of death, thrash and progressive metal. If this is death metal, then so is SABATON. Same would apply to thrash. Progressive metal, yes, that I can see. If honesty is to be injected into the discussion of this band, ICE GIANT frankly is much closer to symphonic power metal than any other description. Outside of some gruff vocals, death and thrash do not enter into it...period.

"Ghost of Humanity" is a concept album about mankind's destruction of good ol' Planet Earth and their search for a new home. Before too long, this is gonna be a documentary, not sci-fi. The lyrical concept is actually the high point of this record and what I enjoy the most about it. Well written and even poignant. As for the music, it tends to be fast, peppy metal with shredding guitars that are honestly completely overwhelmed by the bombastic symphonic instrumentation. That takes over everything like glaciers moving down a mountain. The orchestral stuff is actually pretty well integrated into the music, but the guitars just aren't loud and heavy except for when there's a solo.

It's fairly innocuous and inoffensive to listen to. If that's considered damning with faint praise, so be it. I don't dislike ICE GIANT, but this is rather inconsequential.
